Four Barrel’s original roastery and café, this Mission District flagship was the first of many projects we have designed with Four Barrel over the years. Its location on the Valencia Street retail corridor between 16th and Market Streets contributed to revitalizing the area, joining Pauline’s Pizza, Jack Hanley Gallery and other pioneering, community-oriented entrepreneurs.
Studio BBA brought a keen eye for material, flow, detail and function to the generous interior—working alongside a band of craftsmen baristas as they built it out with their own hands on their own terms.
Creative energy and dialogue made for a dynamic process, resulting in a space infused with wry artistic experimentation. In an aesthetic based on hunter-gatherer tendencies, the bar front is made from upcycled douglas fir framing, the massive tables are mitered glu-lam beams recovered from the side of the road, and porcine taxidermy watches over the coffee service. The clean lines of the custom cast concrete countertops delineate the service areas from the back of the house and roaster production spaces.
Studio BBA's previous office location was right around the corner, where we benefited with other locals from back alley coffee service through the loading dock door on Caledonia Street.
