An expansive, fully modernized facility for Four Barrel Coffee’s cold brew and bean roasting, we designed this Oakland warehouse as a highly functioning adaptive reuse, and an inspiring, comfortable work atmosphere for the staff.
We rejuvenated the building’s fabulous, original vaulted lamellar roof structure and trusses, providing a lofty, warm umbrella over the large-scale roasting equipment and operations. New studio-style, modern office and work spaces were created within a streamlined interior of partition walls, with glazed openings to connect spaces and share light.
Celestial custom up-light fixtures set the large roof area aglow, highlighting its beautiful craftsmanship. Designed as an armature of steel branches in a spoke pattern, each fixture has six branches with a cluster of dimmable LED bulbs.
The roastery’s corner lot gets loads of natural light and enjoys views to the adjacent port of Oakland. We found inspiration in the port location and activity—thinking of the building as a ‘hub within a hub’: surrounded by a thriving transportation zone, with roasting as the industrial nucleus of the coffee process.
