Dubbed the “SS Lucia” by the client for its nautical theme, this outdoor space is the latest addition to Ritual Coffee Roasters’ fleet, and marks Studio BBA’s fourth contribution to the San Francisco Pavement to Parks Initiative.
The parklet’s design was inspired by the concept of shoreline, as an extension of the shoreline created by abandoned ships during the gold rush migration of the mid-1850s. The parklet’s fabrication draws from boat building techniques, using a rib structure as an organizational tool for constructability, and to frame the various ways the parklet can be occupied. Composed of pecky cedar timber, board-form concrete and rusted steel, the raw materials contrast the light, clean atmosphere of Ritual Coffee’s café interior.
A large concrete planter with native vegetation bookends the parklet’s northern end, providing additional seating and a touch of green for the Valencia streetscape. At its south end is a series of vertical bike racks inspired by boat cleats and made from tube steel; fastened to a washed concrete and wood base.
